The powerful and actionable information in this book comes directly from the author's experiences as President of the Student African American Society at Syracuse University from 1988-1990.  In 1989 he spearheaded a successful movement pressuring university administrators to agree to 13 demands designed to strengthen the university's neglected African American Studies Department. Among other things the university agreed to hire an official chairperson of the department, increase funding to acquire additional faculty and graduate assistants, a renovation of the M.L.K. Library, and an agreement to begin a Masters Degree program.
